The University of Edinburgh， founded in 1583， is a public research university in Edinburgh， the capital of Scotland. Known as the "Tounis College" at the beginning， it was renamed King James"s College in 1617. By the 18th century Edinburgh was a leading centre of the European Enlightenment.The university is deeply embedded in the fabric of the city， with many of the buildings in the historic Old Town belonging to the university. It was the fourth university to be established in Scotland and the 6th in the United Kingdom， and is one of the most prestigious universities in the world.The University of Edinburgh is a member of the Russell Group of research-led British universities and， along with Oxford and Cambridge， one of several British universities to be a member of both the Coimbra Group and the LERU (League of European Research Universities). 爱丁堡大学三所大学院分别为：人文和社会科学学院、医学和兽医学学院、科学和工程学院。信息科学，数学和应用数学，兽医学，化学，艺术等处于英国顶级水平。2011年，爱丁堡艺术学院(1907年建立)，并入爱丁堡大学，更名为爱丁堡大学艺术学院。由于学校有一套严格的选拔体制，得到爱丁堡大学的录取通知书并非易事。
