滑雪是一项既浪漫又刺激的体育运动。早在几千年前，当人们的生活条件很落后的时候，人类为了在恶劣的自然环境中生存，发明了可以代替行走的滑雪板，它的应用使得人们可以任意驰骋追寻猎物。滑雪运动起源并发展于斯堪的纳维亚国家。逐渐地，滑雪成为一项世界性的活动，并于1924 成为冬奥会的竞技比赛项目。随着人类社会的发展，滑雪又成为人们的一项娱乐活动。其中，旅游滑雪是出于娱乐、健身的目的，受人为因素制约程度很低，男女老幼均可在雪场上轻松、愉快地滑行，饱享滑雪运动的无穷乐趣。
竞赛滑雪主要有两种：高山滑雪和北欧滑雪。高山滑雪由滑降、小回转和大回转组成。北欧滑雪比赛包括个人越野滑雪赛、
男子接力赛和女子接力赛，此外还有跳台滑雪赛以及北欧混合项目比赛，包括越野赛和跳台赛。目前世界比赛正规的大项目分为：高山滑雪北欧滑雪［越野滑雪(langlauf)、跳台滑雪(ski jumping)
自由式滑雪、冬季两项滑雪、雪上滑板滑雪等。纯竞技滑雪具有鲜明的竞争性、专项性，相关要求严格，非一般人所能适应。
