第5章 破茧成蝶(4)

As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene.

Days and weeks passed.[B]One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully,he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed.It faced a blank wall.

[C]The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said,"Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you."

"Humans should not try to avoid stress any more than they would shun food, love or exercise."Said Dr.Hans Selye, the fl rst physician to document the effects of stress on the body.[A]While here's on question that continuous stress is harmful, several studies suggest that challenging situations in which you're able to rise to the occasion can be good for you.

[B]In a 2001 study of 158 hospital nurses, those who faced considerable work demands but coped with the challenge were more likely to say they were in good health than those who felt they couldn't get the job done.In a study at the Academic Center for Dentistry in Amsterdam, researchers put volunteers through two stressful experiences. In the first,a timed task that required memorizing a list followed by a short test subjects through a gory video on surgical procedures. Those who did well on the memory test had an increase in levels of immunoglobulin A,an antibody that's the body's fl rst line of defense against germs. The video-watchers experienced a downturn in the antibody.

Stress prompts the body to produce certain stress hormones. In short these hormones have a positive effect, including improved memory function."They can help nerve cells handle information and put it into storage,"says Dr.Bruce McEwen of Rockefeller University in New York.[C]But in the long run these hormones can have a harmful effect on the body and brain.

"Sustained stress is not good for you,"says Richard Morimoto,a researcher at Northwestern University in Illinois studying the effects of stress on Iongevity,"It's the occasional burst of stress or brief exposure to stress that could be protective."

You and your parents can stop worrying--Edison,Darwin and lots of more were far from being geniuses in their teens.

History books seldom mention it,but the truth is that many of our greatest figures were practically"beatniks"when they were teenagers.

So,young men and women,if you suffer from the same symptoms, don't despair.[A]The world was built by men and women whose parents worried that they would"never amount to a hill of beans".You don't hear too much about their early failure because parents prefer to cite more inspiring examples.
