Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute， or RPI， is a private research university located in Troy， New York. Rensselaer School was founded in 1824 by Stephen Van Rensselaer and Amos Eaton for the "application of science to the common purposes of life" and is the oldest technological university in the English-speaking world. In 1833 the school became the Rensselaer Institute， and in the 1850s its purpose was broadened to become a polytechnic institution. RPI has established six areas of research as institute priorities： biotechnology， energy and the environment， nanotechnology， computation and information technology， and media and the arts.Advances in these fields have the potential to effect dramatic transformations in 21st century society. The Institute is especially well-known for its success in the transfer of technology from the laboratory to the marketplace so that new discoveries and inventions benefit human life， protect the environment， and strengthen economic development.

System： Over the past century， RPI has grown into a university with five schools： the School of Architecture， the School of Engineering， the School of Humanities， Arts， and Social Sciences， the School of Science， the Lally School of Management & Technology. In accordance with its specialty， RPI has a highly ranked engineering program. The school also uses its scientific specialties to offer unique accelerated programs such as the B.S and M.D. Physician-Scientist Program， completed in seven years， and the B.S. in Science， Technology and Society Law， which takes six years to finish. All together， the university offers around 140 degree programs in 60 fields leading to bachelor"s， master"s， and doctoral degrees.
Education focus： The Rensselaer education is challenging， interactive， and highly relevant. Students immerse themselves in course work that combines theory with learning by experience in unparalleled facilities， using advanced technology. Students are encouraged to work in interdisciplinary programs that allow them to combine scholarly work from several departments or schools. Beyond the classroom， students have extensive opportunities - on campus， in the corporate arena， and abroad - to broaden their perspective and their experience.
