The Pennsylvania State University (commonly referred to as Penn State or PSU) is a public， state-related research university with campuses and facilities in Pennsylvania. Founded in 1855， the university has a stated threefold mission of teaching， research， and public service. Commonwealth chartered it as one of the nation"s first colleges of agricultural science， with a goal to apply scientific principles to farming. The largest of university"s 24 campuses， University Park is almost entirely within the boundaries of State College borough， a site chosen to be near the geographic center of the state. The University Park campus is the administrative and research hub of the University， with more than 40，000 graduate， undergraduate， and professional students and more than 159，000 alumni worldwide. Surrounded by mountains， the school is also close to skiing， snowboarding， and hiking opportunities.
