Three years ago， when I just became a high school student， I found that my knowledge of English was too limited. I also found it very difficult to learn English well. Though I worked hard， I failed. I read a lot of English materials and many reference books outside class， in the hope of improving my English in this way. But it didn t help. I was discouraged and almost wanted to give up.
One day， I found some copies of the magazine English Pictures in the school library by chance. I borrowed them and read them immediately. They had so many interesting stories， so many pictures in English and so many excellent exercises that I didn t want to put them down. From then on， I always borrowed it from the school library. When I read it， I find English easier to learn， and the more I read it， the easier it becomes.
English Pictures has been my best friends. I have been its reader for 4 years. During these years， I ve learnt a lot of grammar， how to use some useful verbs， how to make sentences correctly and how to read texts faster and understand them better. Moreover， I ve also learnt about many strange and interesting things in and outside China， such as the childhood of Abraham Lincoln， how Mother Meng taught her son Meng Zi and so on.
English Pictures can not only widen our knowledge of English， enrich our common sense and enlarge our vocabulary， but also give us courage and pleasure.
Since I made friends with English Pictures， I have become more and more interested in English. One of my English teachers once said， “You should not miss English materials that you can get outside the classroom.”So in my spare time， I always read English Pictures， A School Friend of English and other English materials.
Among these， I like English Pictures best.

My Baby Cat

He did not eat it but played with it.

Road and Friend

9years ago， along that road， there were only a few small trees；today they have grown taller and stronger. In the shade of these， we finally parted for different schools. I m sad. But our competition hasn t stopped， he will be my competitor forever.
The road belongs to both of us， but it gets longer and longer， and our wheels will go faster and faster.

Growth Rings
I like surveying tree rings. The rings， large or small， clear or vague， record the life of a tree. Sometimes， I think not only the trees but also all the people in the world， have rings of their own. They re carving their own rings.
Of course， I have rings of my own. They are growing and changing all the time.

Going Home
Every day， when all the lessons are over， you can see everybody in the classroom laughing and talking freely. That may be the happiest time of the day. Why？Because it is time to go home.

You needn t worry about what others think of your behavior. 全文句子结构变化较多，用词也较客观准确，对玫瑰花及种花人爱花的心情写得尤为出色。文章中某些语言上的问题值得提醒注意：
(1)去年11月(而今年11月还没有到)一般可说成 last November，而不说 in November last year。
(2)花芽、花蕾等长出来用 come out， 不用 come up。
(3)A naughty boy must have picked it 也可改为 It must be a naughty boy who have picked it. 的“It be+that”的强调式结构。
Bamboo
I began to like bamboo at the first sight of it， because I was deeply impressed by its lifeforce.
Last summer， I made a trip to the Muogan Mountains. Situated in Zhejiang Province， the Muogan Mountains is famous for bamboo. Because of this， the mountain is a tourist attraction in summer.
A vast amount of bamboo stands straight on the mountains. In the scorching summer， high bamboo plants with their slim leaves stand still， hiding the villas. However， towards the evening， they sway in the gentle evening breeze with their slender leaves brushing the roofs and walls of the houses. Their shade makes the temperature in the house much lower than that outside. People can do whatever they feel like doing in the cool house without sweating. This side effect of the bamboo creates an ideal place for people who dislike hot weather.
During my stay in Muogan， I paid a visit to a local“Bamboo Exhibition.”I was surprised when I entered the hall which was a world of bamboo products. The items on display， from shelters to utensils， were all made of bamboo. They displayed all species of bamboo that exist in the world. There was a bamboo house with bamboo chairs and tables， beautiful and comfortable. What struck me most was a pair of handmade bamboo lamps. One was a lifelike dragon and the other an uprising phoenix. Thousand of strips of bamboo no thicker than hair shaped the dragon and phoenix. During my visit， I came to know why people use bamboo in their life. It can withstand hardship and resist rotting.
I like bamboo most importantly because the high， straight plant represents a spirit of strong will， never losing heart. If it were ever weakminded， how could tender young bamboo shoots break the hard layers of earth and dirt？Whenever I meet with difficulties， I always think of bamboo which gives me courage and strength to overcome the difficulties.

(1)at the first sight of sth. 有“第一眼看到某物(就怎么样)”的含义，故谓语加上 began 予以呼应。
(2)in the house 作后置定语修饰 the temperature， 而 more than 结构中要求比较的两者在语法成分上相一致，因此 outside 前要加上 that 以代替 the temperature， 这样一来 outside 也成了that 的后置定语，就能加以比较了。
(3)on display 是item 的后置定语。
A Night of Late Autumn
That night of late autumn was cool， I think. So I went out with an agitated heart and walked on the path.
It was misty on the autumn night. Everything before me became hazy. The hazy lights from the windows of the distant buildings looked like the eyes of sleepy men. The hazy pavilions lay there as if they were floating in the air. The hazy trees and grass made me feel that I was in a fairyland. The hazy autumn night was very beautiful.
Everything was hazy， except the moon hanging in the sky. She is a kind mother， I thought， giving bright light to the earth， and the child of the earth feels gently comfortable. The moon light was so bright that it turned everything silver， which made me feel that I was floating in the air.
Suddenly， a wild cat ran across the grassland by the roadside. It stopped to run round to look at me. Its body dissolved in the darkness， but its green eyes stared at me all the time. As I came nearer， it ran away quickly and disappeared into the darkness.
A couple by the roadside were whispering. On this quiet night， they were enjoying their romantic love. At that time， a piece of cloud came to cover the moon as if to give the young people a peaceful veil.
It was now deep into the night. On my way home， I found the street lamps pulling my shadow long. In the distance， there were faint sounds of singing.
On this night of autumn， I no longer felt agitated， and made my way home with a quiet mind.

Clearly， autumn is the season of foliage. There are leaves of so many colors that no painter has enough pigments to paint them， and that no author has enough words to describe them. This wonder can only be credited to the nature. I am always attracted by the beauty of the colorful leaves. Even a single leaf has a lot of hues. Is it green， brown， yellow， or red？I just cannot tell the definite colour. When held against the shining sun， the yellow leaf itself is shining like gold.
The high blue sky is another charm of autumn. It seems like a wise old man， calm and highspirited， and is always generous with pleasant sunshine and clear weather.
Those leaves and the blue sky， though arousing my love for autumn， are still not the dearest characteristics of the season. The leaves are fragile and will fall one day. And sometimes in other seasons， the sky may be clearer， in the summer after a shower， for example. But no other season is comparable to the autumn in terms of its“wisdom”. It benefits people with not only the harvest but also the magnificent scene. It really shows the intellect of the nature.
We human beings also have the spirit of the autumn. Have you ever seen old people doing morning exercises？In spite of their old age and fragile bodies， they are still active and industrious. They are to the society what beautiful leaves of the autumn to the nature. I am really moved by them. I really love autumn.

The Best Picture in My Eyes
In my room， there is a picture entitled “Feeding the birds”on the wall. Though its painter is unknown to us， in my view it s the best picture I ve ever seen.
Though the picture is named“Feeding the birds”， we only see a woman sitting on a chair with three little girls seated opposite her. The girl in the middle is opening her mouth to a spoon of food the lady is giving. The other two girls are looking at the spoon. In the picture there is also a hen with some chicks walking around them. The whole picture makes people feel peaceful and tend to imagine.
Suppose the painter s purpose is to remind us of something that is worth remembering. Just like feeding birds， our parents give us not only food to eat， clothes to wear， but endless love as well. Bathed in their love， we grow up little by little. When we are in trouble， they always help us as much as possible though our willful temperament often hurts them. When we make progress in our studies， they always congratulate us happily as if they themselves succeeded. Parents love can t be expressed by words. We should do our best to repay it.

A Starlit Night
Night has fallen. The moon hangs quietly in the sky. All the stars emit their soft and soothing light. Birds have gone back to their nests. There is a breeze blowing. The night is silent.
This beautiful scenery reminded me of the old days spent with my grandmother in a small town. On hot evenings， we would usually stay outdoors for a long time. I lay on the bamboo bed under the stars with a big fan in my hand， listening to my grandmother tell me all kinds of legendary stories. The most unforgettable one was about Niulang and Zhinü. It was a charming love story， though at that time I could not understand all this. I always raised my head， hoping to point out which was Star Niulang and which was Star Zhinü among the thousands， but I failed.

An Early Morning Walk in the Park
Last Sunday I woke up at 6：00 in the morning. I got up quickly and opened the window. It was a fine day. The sun had just risen， shining brilliantly. Everything seemed to be covered with a large piece of golden silk. Occasionally I could hear some birds singing in the trees. It was so fine. I decided to go for a walk in the park near my home. I walked all the way to the park.

In the Examination Room
When I， as one of the monitors， got to the examination room the other day， all the examinees were already there. There were still ten minutes before we monitors gave them papers. I sensed that the atmosphere was frozen. It seemed that an important event would soon happen， and the future of the examinees would be determined at that very moment. Some sat there， looking worried；some looking confident；some looking tired and nervous with their eyes surrounded by two big black circles. From this glance， I could make out that they must have stayed up very late in preparing for today s examination.
Soon the bell broke the silence.
The examination papers were handed out to them. They quickly glanced over the questions and， at the same time， made their choice. Some sighed with great relief， some smiled， while some scratched their heads savagely. At my rate， most of them lost not a second to start working.
Soon， the room was drowned in the noise of scratching paper and of regular breathing.
The bell rang again and all papers were handed in. All the examinees streamed out of the room， busily exchanging their opinions and their results. Some talked loudly， wearing triumphant smiles on their faces while others made low voices， looking defeated.

Shanghai at Night
Shanghai is one of the most beautiful large cities in the world. It is also a beautiful seaport which attracts tourists from all parts of the world. Many people visit it during the day， but the scenery at night is wonderful.
When the moon rises， the gentle soft lights shine over the sea， stars twinkle all night， which look like the attendants of the beautiful queen——the moon. Many boats and ships go across the sea and leave silver lines behind them in the water that ripples along.
At night Shanghai is covered with so many electric lights that look like those decorated light in Christmas trees. And the lights are also reflected in the water. In the clear sky the bright moon seems like a big one. They are twinkling stars. The combined light makes Shanghai very beautiful.
Shanghai is a beautiful city in the day but even more wonderful at night.

Besides， she gets along well with her neighbours and colleagues. When they have difficulties， she is always ready to lend them a helpful hand. Beijing in my eyes is becoming more and more beautiful.When you walk along the street，you will see lots of flowers and trees.The air is fresh，the sun is shining and all are fine and nice.

描写文(Deion)是通过我们的五官感觉去描述周围的事物，作者通过自己的感受，用生动形象的语言，对人物、自然景物、社会环境和动植物等进行具体、生动、形象的描述。它是用富有表现力的文字描绘客观事物的一种表现形式。写人则栩栩如生、历历在目；写景则如临其境，如睹其物；写物则绘声绘色，神形兼备。
所有描写都包含两个要素：一是对象(object)， 二是观察者(observer)。描写文可以分为客观描写(objective deion)和主观描写(subjective deion)两种。客观描写有时称physical deion或scientific deion。就是指对所要描写的对象外貌客观地记录下来。这种描写要以准确、清楚为原则。客观性描写文作者很像是科学家，他要从自己的工作中严格地排除个人意见和感情。主观描写又称imaginative deion或impressionistic deion。这种描写不重外在细节的准确，而是通过观察者对周围事物的感悟和想象，激发读者的感情，让人们去感觉，而不是让人们去看。作者要想使自己的描写成功，不仅感觉要深，而且要在自己的心目中明确那是什么感情。只有作者了解了自己的心情才能把它交流给读者。
人们通常所说的描写，主要是指艺术性描写。我们这里所说的描写也包括了一部分用于说明文里的技术性描写，如地区的介绍等。描写，有单独成文，也有穿插在其他体裁之中的。比如，在记叙文中，景物描写可以创造某种气氛、烘托人物性格、展示事件背景等。
描写文写法大致可归纳如下三点：
描写人物，从人物的面貌、性格、行为等特点入手刻画一个栩栩如生的人物形象；描写事物，侧重描写其外观、颜色、形状以及作者对事物的印象、态度等；描写景象，从不同的角度描绘对同一景象的不同感受，并注入自己的情感，通过生动的语言把自己的感受传达给读者。
描写文的特点是用语言描绘一幅人物、事物或景色等的图画，无论是客观性还是主观性描述常常有感情色彩，只是客观性的描述文所含有的情感因素相对少一些。
无论是描写人物、事物、景色，还是别的现象，最好不要面面俱到，也不要作泛泛描述，应该选择典型情节和特征进行重点描写。
在描写文的写作过程中要注意以下几点：
(1)要考虑好选择描写的角度和次序。角度，就是我们通常所讲的人称，用第一和第三人称都可以，但目的、内容和效果却不同。描写次序是指先写什么后写什么的问题。一般来讲，英语描写短文总是按空间顺序(spatial order)来安排次序的。比如要描写一个房间时，要从先看到的部位写起，从上到下或从下到上，从左到右或从外到内等。
(2)要选择好重点部位或内容来写。对人物、事物、心理和景色的描写要突出重点，应抓住最富于感染力的情节和特征来写。
(3)要把描写和叙述结合起来写。好的描写总是把记事、写人、状物、写景紧密地糅合在一起，使其浑然一体，既突出重点，又有点有面、点面结合，创造出一种和谐的美，让客观事物在自己的笔下描绘得更生动，更逼真。
