怎样在美国使用公共电话
打公共电话时，美国各州费用不同，通常local call是25分，也有的州是10分或30分不等。打电话使用的钱币是5分(nickle)，10分(dime)、25分(quarter)。其程序是先拿起听筒(pick up the phone handset)。等听到口兹的一声(dial tone)，再投入硬币(put the money in the coin slot)，然后拨动号盘(dial the number)，就算是大功告成了。
接着等到对方接了电话后，你可以说I d like to speak to Mr.Smith，对方如果说Speaking，那他就是你要找的人，当然对方也可以回答：This is(s)he.

关于电话留言
打电话时当你想与之通话的人不在时，可以托人给其留言。另外你还可以在对方的自动应答机(也可以叫录音电话)上留言。一般情况下在自动应答机开始工作之前，你会听到提示的话语，比如Please leave a message after the tone.(听到提示音后请留言)或者I m sorry to tell you we are not at home，please leave a message.(对不起，我们不在家，请留言)。这时在听到一声信号后你就可以留口信了。当户主想听留言时，他只要拨通自己家的号码再拨一个密码就可以了。

日期的读法，英美之间是有一定差别的，如12月3日，英国人常读作the third of December或December the third.而美国人一般读作December third.
时刻很少用a quarter past ten，seven to six，half ast four之类的表达，而直接依序读出小时、分钟即可。如：
